Personality:
Knowledge is incredibly important to Cortana and it's a large part of her being. As an artificial intelligence, a computer program, she basically is knowledge and has a drive to find more, as much as she can gather. Obviously, she's incredibly intelligent, as that tends to be a trait in computer programs. She has been known to risk herself to gain intel, for example allowing herself to be plugged in to a Covenant ship's computer systems, and on the first Halo when she downloaded the vast knowledge the Forerunner computers contained, though doing so nearly overloaded her--it had almost been too much for her to handle. Her primary directive as an AI, even, is software infiltration, used in order to gain information from the enemy or, in some cases, even allies. Information and the search for that information, the need for it, is a big part of who Cortana is.

Cortana is very loyal. Of course, she had loyalty to humanity programmed into her when she'd been created, but she thinks that part of her loyalty has more to do with her than her programming. She was built to help the human race in the war against the Covenant, to help protect them. She's even got some human traits or "quirks" of her own, such as the way she holds herself or moves in her holographic form, or the relationship she formed with Master Chief. Then there's her loyalty to Chief, which grows to outweigh that which she has for humanity. They've been together for almost all of her functioning life, he's protected her, and they care deeply for one another. No one is as important to her as he is. Even as she begins to succumb more and more to rampancy and her opinions on the human race begin to change for the worse, she never stopped caring about Chief. In the end, she sacrifices herself for him--what she thinks is her final act in her life is to save Master Chief, not humans, from the Didact.

Though she was created from an exact copy of Dr. Catherine Halsey's brain, thus based on her mind, Cortana has a personality of her own. She differs greatly from Halsey in many ways--in some of her opinions, in her sense of humour, and in many of her behaviours. However, she also shares many traits with Halsey--hard not to when you have the same base as someone. She holds some of Halsey's memories, as well as has some of the same values and opinions. Even the fact that she's built for software infiltration makes them similar, considering Halsey herself is a highly talented hacker. And of course, there's her affection for Chief. Cortana had a preference for him from the start, much like Halsey had, and when given the choice of which Spartan she wanted to be paired with, she chose Chief because he's lucky, just as Halsey had picked him as a child for the Spartan program because of his luck.

All that said, Cortana usually tries to do what she believes is right. Much of her life, it's been what she believed was right for humanity, such as when she stopped Chief from activating the first Halo ring before he knew what it did, and staying aboard the High Charity with intent to destroy the ship and Delta Halo when she didn't trust a remote detonation to do the job. When it comes down to it, she wants to protect, and she's willing to put her life on the line to do just that. This of course includes believing she's going to be destroyed but saving Chief anyway.

She's not modest. Fully aware of her capabilities, of being smarter than any human being could ever be, she doesn't beat around the bush about what she can do. However, she's not arrogant, either. If all it is is simply stating the truth, it's not arrogant, and she doesn't believe herself to be better than anyone else or above them for what she can do.

What may or may not be surprising, depending on what AI one is used to interacting with, is that Cortana is playful. She enjoys teasing light-heartedly and does it quite often. She's quick with the wit and has a sense of humour which is, admittedly, somewhat cryptic. Sometimes she'll make a comment to lighten the mood of a serious situation, though she is well aware of the time and place for such a thing and thus knows when to be serious and when she can insert something a little less so.

As well, she's incredibly clever. Maybe that goes without saying, being an AI with access to all kinds of information and databases, but it should be stated anyway. She's often the one to come up with a plan of action to complete a mission, and a lot of these are successes. Of course, they can't all be and so mistakes are still occasionally made, though this happens particularly once she's hit rampancy.

On the topic of rampancy, it affects Cortana's personality greatly. As rampancy makes an AI unstable, she's grown far more prone to anger than she ever used to be. In the past, she'd been good at keeping her cool, but her instability makes that a challenge. As well, rampancy has made her all the more aware of her own mortality--and how much she doesn't want to die. She never wanted to think herself to death. Then there's the fact that instability occasionally causes her to talk to herself, often argue with herself, which tends to end in a fit of anger and loss of control of herself.

Notes: As she is an AI and I would like to play her in that form in game, I should explain that she comes in a chip that can be plugged into holotanks, terminals, and full computer systems. I think for playing her in this form, she would end up in the Moira's computers/systems, so long as that is okay. She could only reach information and such that she is allowed to gain, couldn't get into closed parts of the ships, ride around in crewmember MIDs if they agree to it, etc, I know Black Box was like that, but I thought it seemed a good idea to add this little note just in case!
Worse comes to worse, I can play her in a human body or something, but I'd certainly rather keeping her a proper AI.

Abilities/Skills:
Covenant Knowledge: Built for software infiltration, Cortana has never had much trouble breaking through Covenant security measures in their computer systems. Thus, never being unable to access the information their databases hold, she has gained a great deal of intel on them and, thanks as well to Forerunner databases on Halo, she has a better knowledge of Covenant technology and weapons than any human, any other AI, and even the Covenant themselves. As well, having once captured and decompiled a Covenant AI, Cortana was able to copy two of its functions for her own use--cloning herself and, most relevant to her Covenant knowledge, the ability to translate Covenant speech.

Running Ships: As with most smart AIs, Cortana is able to, and very good at controlling military ships. It may not be what she was built for, but it's definitely within her abilities. Able to make calculations and process information more quickly and accurately than a human, she's able to pilot any ships with ease--though in most cases she is still under the directions of the Captain. Considering this ability is probably a little game-breaking, I figure I'll nerf it a bit by saying she can't access everything she needs to of the Moira that would allow her any control over it.

Accessing Computers: As a computer program, she can of course access all kinds of systems, though there are a few different methods that can be used, depending on the technology, system, creators, etc. The most common and simplest way she can be inserted into a system is through her data chip, the chip that contains her being, being inserted or "plugged in" to the system. There have been some cases where a simple touch from her has been enough for her to enter the system and she's also capable of linking systems of two ships so she can be on/control both at the same time.

Hacking: As a software infiltration program, it only makes sense that Cortana is a very adept hacker. It's rare for her to come across security measures that she can't by pass, whether they're human, Covenant, or Forerunner. The ones she's had the most difficulty with have been Forerunner, but part of these complications may have been caused by her rampancy while on the shield world Requiem. Of course, for the sake of not breaking the game, she will find herself unable to/challenged greatly by the security of the Moira, unable to get access to what she isn't allowed to.

Cloning and Fragmenting: The ability to "clone" herself is one Cortana gained from a Covenant AI after decompiling it. While she can't create a full copy of herself, she is able to make secondary, imperfect versions of her that hold some of her abilities so that they can be used while she is somewhere else/unable to go on a particular mission. The clones retain bits of her personality, though not all, and are only capable of the ability/processes they were created to carry out. During her rampancy, she's seen to fragment herself. It's similar to her cloning process but not quite exact, given that the fragmentation is caused more by her instability.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Intelligent
+ Good at planning
+ Aware of her limitations and abilities
+ Loyal to her cause
- Unstable/rampant
- Sometimes too curious for her own good
- No physical presence

Items: Nothing but the data chip that contains her.

[ Though she knows she could manage a video feed by simply broadcasting her image out across the crew's MID screens, Cortana decides that for the moment, sticking to audio is easier. ]

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the Moira.

[ Her tone of voice is light and pleasant--and why shouldn't it be? Being here isn't so bad, it means she's not dead. ]

It's a pleasure to be here with you all. I've been going back over the network records for the last little while though, and I must say that this is the most argument I've seen amongst the crew of a ship. Never have I witnessed such conflict like this--I'm much more used to ship crews working together whether they like each other or not.

[ There's a pause and she hums thoughtfully. ]

Then again, I've never been on a ship where the crew was all from different universes, trapped here against their will. Given that, maybe the amount of conflict is impressively small for how long some of you have been here. I just hope that most of you have moved on from it all.

All the same, I look forward to working with and meeting as many of you as I can. This "multiverse" scenario we have going on here is fascinating and I'd love to learn more. Don't be surprised if we meet and I ask you all kinds of questions about where you're from.

[ The smile she wears is evident in her voice now, enthralled by the possibility of learning about some of the other universes that exist out there. ]

Looking forward to it. In the meantime, feel free to contact me if you find yourself with computer trouble--I know a thing or two about the systems around here.

Cortana, over and out.
